“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish,” said Michelle Obama in a 2020 Instagram post. Women are powerful and limitless. Women can accomplish or achieve anything once they set their focus on it.
Throughout history, women have faced countless barriers, to their homes, society, and workplaces. Regardless of challenges like these, women continue to lift themselves, push boundaries, and break limitations placed upon them. From securing rights to education, the right to vote, and the right to lead, women prove that nothing is impossible because they are women, not just women. Nothing can hold women back in today’s generation as they are just as capable as their counterparts. However, as women continue to march on and break barriers in every area of their lives, there is one crucial element that is often overlooked—their wellness. Women often prioritize their careers over wellness and focus more on doing their work than making time for their health. But honestly speaking, having good health is the foundation to achieve who they want to be.
In an article entitled, “Balancing Career Success and Well-Being: A Holistic Approach” Washington State University wrote that achieving a successful career and good health requires a lot of effort and self-awareness. Wellness and career are both necessary to becoming who one wants to be.
According to an exclusive interview with Melissa Coulier and Melanie Samuels in the article “GRAZIA Exclusive: Melissa Coulier & Melanie Samuels Discuss How Prioritizing Health is Changing the Game for Women in Power,” written by Karli Poliziani, 32% of senior leadership roles globally are held by women. However, because of the natural responsibilities and ‘burden’ of being a leader and a woman in the workforce, 53% of female executives report experiencing burnout compared to 41% of their male counterparts.
The reality is that leadership roles can and will weigh a person down, no matter what gender they are, but apparently, more so if one is a woman, causing burnout and stress. As such, those who focus only on climbing the corporate ladder without thinking about their well-being may hinder their success, as they neglect the foundation for achieving their breakthrough—their health.
